Folate receptors including folate receptor α (FRα) are overexpressed in up to 90% of ovarian cancers. Ovarian cancers overexpressing FRα often exhibit high degrees of drug resistance and poor outcomes. A porphyrin chassis has been developed that is readily customizable according to the desired targeting properties. Thus, compound O5 includes a free base porphyrin, two water-solubilizing groups that project above and below the macrocycle plane, and a folate targeting moiety.
